Coronavirus cases fell by 6% in Kansas counties that followed the state’s mask mandate – but rose 100% in areas that opted out, CDC study finds


  • Researchers looked at all 105 counties in Kansas after Governor Laura Kelly issued a mask mandate that went into effect on July 3
  • Of the counties, 81 counties opted out and 24 counties, which comprised two-thirds of the state’s population, followed the order  
  • More than one month later, cases in the 24 counties decreased by 6% to 16 cases per 100,000 people  
  • In comparison, cases in nonmandated counties spiked by 100% to 12 per 100,000 over the same time period
