California orders 5,000 body bags while Colorado and New Mexico bring in refrigerated trucks on second day of vaccine rollout

  • Nationwide, there were 3,019 new deaths reported on Tuesday. It is only the third time daily deaths have exceeded 3,000 fatalities throughout the pandemic and all three have occurred in the last week
  • There were 198,357 new confirmed cases on Tuesday and nearly 113,000 people nationwide currently hospitalized with the virus – the highest number at any point during the pandemic 
  • California Governor Gavin Newsom warned of the possibility of thousands of deaths in the coming weeks as the state faces its ‘most intense’ coronavirus surge yet 
  • The state’s 14-day average positivity rate climbed to 10.6 percent, up from 4.8 percent a month ago
  • California’s 7-day average for daily deaths has risen almost three-fold in the last month to 163 this week 
  • Newsom said the state distributed 5,000 additional body bags to Los Angeles, San Diego and Inyo counties
  • Sixty 53-foot refrigerated storage units are on standby in counties and at hospitals, he said
  • New Mexico and Colorado have also begun deploying refrigerated trucks to hard-hit counties in recent days
